motivational talk by Mayank Khandelwal - A NITIE alumn

Today I went to listen to Mayank Khandelwal ,he is a alumn of nitie and he is a student of management batch 2008.This is the guy which I wanted to listen from the day I came to nitie,I have heard a lot about this guy from mandi sir and all the seniors.so he came at sharp 3 am which was the time given to us,actually in the mail send by the plaacecom people the subject line was a motivational talk by Mayank Khandelwal and guidance for summer placement  but I  was sursprised by the attendance of people over there. There were students from 1st year as well as 2nd year and actually 2nd year people were more enthusiastic about listening him.

So he started his session by first introducing himself and he told about that he did his summers from ITC and then finals in Yes Bank.He started telling about the current job scenario and then people like me questioned him about different industry segments and how they will do in the near future. He told that looking at the current job scenario every student of the 1st year should focus on the brand name for summers and after that for the finals they should prepare their resumes in such a way that It should reflect your career choice.
After this he showed up his cv and the remarkable this in his cv is that he had won around 15 different B-School competition’s in India. He had published around 5 different research papers in different fields. He is a CFA level 1 and 2,he is a college topper of nitie. He emphasized in cv building that how one should build his cv. He told us to participate in as many competitions as we can and he told us the reasons for doing the same. He told that he won cash rewards from the competition’s that he actually covered his whole fees of nitie from it and after hearing this I was imagining the first class of mandi sir in which he told us the concept of Apni Roti khud Kamao.

At the last segment of this talk he opened the floor for Q&A session.one person from the senior batch asked a interesting question that in 2006-08 P&G used to take 8 -10 students from nitie but now they are taking only 2 students what might be the reason. He actually gave a veru insightful answer that Nitie has actually projected itself as a engineering college than a MBA college in an industry and it needs to be changed ,he also criticized nitie for ignoring its rich geographic advantage of Mumbai and also told the perspective of industry that nowadays industry people are thinking that instead of picking an average guy from a good institute why not take a topper from a B grade college which in my opinion is also logical.

So friends 1 more Insightful Alumn talk ,see you soon in some other interesting topics of Bschool study

Excellence is a comdination of efficiency and effectiveness

Guys, back with one another interesting masterpiece on organizational management.

The session is based on "Three idiots crossing the valley" scenario below.

So It started with the below activity ,here you can see mandi sir explaining to the students the activity and how it is relevant to todays organizational behaviour.

The task at hand required a group of three people to move from left side of the valley to the right side with the help of a pole.you can see in the below image my batchmates are demostrating the same.

They started with dividing the task into 9 subtask categorised below.

Structuring of Task:
There are three position in this whole task.
1. Fully unsafe: The hanging position is of high risk.
2. Half Safe: One foot on the ground and other hanging in valley is medium risk.
3. Fully Safe: The position where both the feet are on ground is of no risk.

Here if you notice all the persons go through this phase. So all positions are same. The tasks should be designed in such a way that it shouldnot be dependent on person.

So Time for Learnings from the task

Team Excellence:
Excellence is a comdination of efficiency and effectiveness. Individual cannot achieve excellence but a team an organisation can achieve that. Efficiency and effectiveness both comes simultaneously and has to be handled simultaneously. Effectiveness is where to go? and efficiency is how to go efficiently i.e at reduced cost or enhanced safety. But to put effect efficiency one has to again think efficiently.

So Over and out for the time being see you soon in next session of POM.

Manzil mil hi jayegi bhatakte huye hi sahi Gumraah tho woh hai jo ghar se nikle hi nahi

This post is about the first guest lecture of nitie which i attended because it was invited by professor mandi and the inner me is also confused for the last one month stay in nitie that why i am here ,what i am doing here infact i am questioning the very decision of doing an mba.therefore on saturday noon i decided to attend this guest lecture because he is an alumn of nitie ,I wanted to know how does nitie helped them in becoming a better manager and better individual.

Prasad sir started the lecture by introducing nikhil and asked the students about his blog and to be very honest i have not read his blog before attending his lecture which i truly regret at the time of attending his session. Nikhil started his lecture by asking some basic simple questions like what do you want to do after mba job or enterpreneurship and everybody answered in a typical convenient manner that first they want to do job for few years and then take up business.Infact I was the only one person which didn't raised hand when he asked how many of you want to sit in campus placements which i don't know why i did that but luckily he didn't noticed it and i escaped from the art of giving some fake reply.Literally i am still confused what i want to do in life ,i know i want to become enterpreneur but then i question my decision to do mba because to become enterpreneur why mba is required .For this very reason i attended his lecture.

Sorry i got carried away in the last para lets continue about the lecture.so nikhil after asking all these questions gave an insight of enterpreneurship that one should do business only when he or she is actually passionate about it ,one by one he started demolishing all myths about doing business. The first one is that businessman have loads of money and they enjoy their life he gave an example of naukri.com and justdial that how they started and after how much time they tasted success and he told that in business no matter how much you earn eventually all will go in expanding your business for the initial 10 15 years.so he gave the first lesson of PERSEVERANCE. secondly , he told that its not like that you are your own boss while doing a business because there are still people whom you need to convince and he gave a very good example that while being in a job atleast you will confront in english but in business .you can easily decode his feelings by the preceding line.

After that one more gentleman came and joined the session and he is more of a easy going marwari guy.he entertained the crowd very well till the last of session. He shared his journey till nitie and after nitie. Then they started talking about mastishk their brainchild in nitie ,they gave an insight about it and told us how they got rejected ,neglected and finally everybody wants to be with them.they told about the art of enterprising and how till now its helping them in their professional carrer.

So here after listening all these ,some clarity came to me that i am in right track of doing some meaningful thing to my life but the journey has just started and i am still in the process of finding my dream .what to do how to do when to do all these questions are still answered but i hope this 2yrs will bring some clarity and mental peace to me.ending todays blog with one favourite urdu shayari of mine.

Manzil mil hi jayegi bhatakte huye hi sahi Gumraah tho woh hai jo ghar se nikle hi nahi

Lessons Of Management from three monks

Hi Folks coming up with yet another mind boggling session. Read Below ............

First of all before telling you about the session ,I would like all of you to watch the below video

Introduction about the above movie.
The film is is a Chinese animated story released in 1980 and directed by A Da. The story is about three monks coming to a monastery and learning to co-exist just like a real world corporate scenario where people from different backgrounds come to a common forum and have to co-exist.

so after watching this movie the obvious question which comes to mind is what is so great about this movie,we as a management student has a lot to learn from this movie .The lessons are briefly described below.
1.Attitude of each team member determines the fate of the task and decides the success rate.
2.Disputes tend to arise when there is more than one person involved.
3.Scientific and objectives measurements and instruments should be used to resolve the conflict.
4.one should use the innovative methods to come out of crisis.

Now comes the next topic about CVF(competing values framework)

Here in the above diagram there are four quadrants and the essence of management is to focus on all four quadrants simultaneously. mandi sir explained this concept by giving an example of driving a car. During driving we look on front and back both simultaneously similarly we need to focus on all four quadrants to improve the productivity.

To relate the above framework with three monk story we can think of when all the three people started working together they showed the people angle of it by not leaving anyone behind it,similarly the performance angle is shown by improving productivity with innovation of pulley system.

At the end of session we did a productivity analysis and we found out that three people while carrying a single bucket through pulley system is best in terms of productivity.

THE CRUX OF THE SESSION IS :
NO MANAGEMENT IS REQUIRED WHEN YOU DEFINE A PROCESS.

How to prepare a Smart Goal and strive for achieving it.

Friends Today's topic is of goal setting ...

The punch line which came after Today's class is -
GOAL SETTINGS SHOULD BE SPIRAL

The class started with enthu as usual ,mandi sir came up with yet another new handicraft ,some kind of wired boxes with red and blue colour and moreover it can be dismantled again and can be recreated into some other shape. He explained the concept of solving maths equation like a+b whole square ,cube with that wired box.

The idea behind telling this weird concept was to make us understand the importance of normal wired cube.he wanted us to realize how this simple product can be marketed and sold in a real world market.

Next he told us about the annual report of The Economic Times in which a spiral appeared and then came another thing from his JuteBag and this time it was a snail which is spiral in shape ,he wanted each and everyone sitting in the class to feel the shape of spiral .He told us how Economic Times business grew spirally.

we can relate the spiral concept with the help of Fibonacci series.
1+1+2+4+8+16

He also gave us the important formula
G.S*G.A =Performance.

where G.S =Goal setting
          G.A=Goal acheived

After this he gave us the same tower building exercise to beginwith once again and he drew one graph shown below.

In the above graph the highest point is Goal Set after that potential after that Goal achieved and the last one is history.

The crux of the lecture was Pygmalion effect. This effect says that the greater the expectation placed upon people the better they perform.so in the tower building exercise our class history was of 27 cubes ,first thing was done to set the target and it was set at 50 .After that Achieved target was got and it was pretty impressive but i will not be able to disclose it here :)

So friends This is it for today ,see you in coming sessions.

The Bidder ,The Auctioneer, The Scintilla of Knowledge in a Ocean full of Knowledge !

So finally the first session of this subject  is over and believe me this has to be an introductory session of every firm which hire budding managers.

I sincerely regret that I was not able to capture the video of this lecture because I was so indulged in it. Anyways I will try my level best to give you an essence of this session .First of all I want to tell that I was in so much of an awe after the session was over ,of the way Mandi sir took his session .I mean to say that I never ever in my entire student career I came across this type of session where the message is conveyed in such an art full way where you don’t need to open a book ,write down anything and still you think that you have completed the whole encyclopedia of organizational management.

He started the lecture with an exercise of building tower with cubes of similar sizes. He is not shy from asking us to bid for this event  in real Indian currency and it should be in multiple of 100.some smart chaps started the bid with 100 and as a real auctioneer he was able to make us bid till 500.The person who did the bid would have never thought that the more he bid the more chocolates everyone else in the class is going to get. With a fake smile in his face, that he got an opportunity because he bid more, he came in front of class to do that exercise. The exercise was to build the cube tower which I try to describe it with below image.

The smart chap was able to build the tower of 16 cubes which is good by any standard .Then mandi sir asked us the question is it possible to go ahead like this and till how many. Everyone understood that it is not possible to go ahead with this because we understood that it has some limitation because of gravity, weight etc .Then he explained us that this is the problem with any business which is run by craftsmen ,he gave us numerous examples of Idli wala,a shoe maker,a dhobi ,a jewelry shop owner etc. He told that this is not management ,immediately a question came to my mind why this is not management because i thought this is management but it needs to be improvised and i gave an example which can be explained by below image.

But he clarified that this has also got limitation which i understood .so here comes the conclusion that "Craftmanship is not a management"

Wise man say that a good beginning is Job half done, by relying on those i started learning the concept of management and it started with another activity. This time he choose a group of  8 people and gave the same task with some caveats and below are point by point word by word explanation of those.

1.only one person will be making the tower with his eyes closed.
2.every person will be able to talk to the person just infront of him not anyone else.

Below is a pictorial representation of it.

The very first obvious question while starting this activity is how many blocks will they able to build as a tower the reply was 15.now the person whose eyes are closed started building the tower one by one and the person just after him is guiding him whenever he was going wrong but other person after him was also giving him suggestions and similar every person standing apart was giving advice to person in front of him and finally he managed it till 10 only.

The learning from this activity are described below.
  1. Lot of people are advising each other instead of doing the real work. The solution should have been right in the beginning they must have formed a team of doers, supporters, maintaince work, auditing work, testing work etc.
  2. In the first place the assessment should have done according to the skillset of persons.
  3. After the tower fell the learnings should have been noted down so that it should not repeat in future.
  4. All middle level managers are useless is the notion in industry and for this to change the actual work needs to be identified.

Here I am pausing this journey for a while ,I will regain my Knowledge and will be back in couple of days.
